Sure picked a hell of a time to show up in this place. Nice to have that mess all over and done with, eh?

Good job, everyone. Time for some well-deserved R&R.

To that end, I suppose it's time a man put himself to work. Anyone know where a guy can catch a few job leads?

Considering we've all been eating camp food for the past few days...

Well yeah, but I meant before that. A certain home-cooked breakfast nonwithstanding, of course. Everything we had on the Archangel was pre-made and frozen.

... That must've gotten old very fast. I understand why they would do that, though. It's convenient.

Yep. Also, you never know how long it'll be before you get a chance to resupply, so you don't want anything that can go bad.

You'd be right about it getting old, though. [He chuckles before going back to the meal.]

[Aerith beams.] Well! Let's hope you don't have to eat that kind of stuff for a while.

You never realize how much you miss having this sort of thing until you have it again, you know? I could get used to this. [And yes, it shows. He's rather hungry.]

I understand. There's only so much that rations can do for a person. [She's eating politely, but still making good work of her dinner.]

They'll nourish a man's body, but never his spirit. [Oh, he's being polite about it, just...

Oh, sometimes, when I can remember.

[Totally ignoring that could-have-been-a-come-on.]

[Awww. Lame.] Seems like a place to remember to me. [He looks around.] So... I guess these places are all run by people who've come here like us, huh?

Going to dinner isn't as fun alone. [She shuffles some food around her plate while studying him.]

Actually... only a handful of shops in town are ran by castle residents. The townspeople have their own lives, even their own holidays.

...really? Go figure. Guess that makes us guests here more than I'd thought.

[Grin.] I agree, it isn't as fun alone. I'll have to do something about that.

Yep. They're charming people, as long as you don't mention the castle to them.

[She looks down, modest. And maybe a touch coy at that.] I wouldn't have any objections.

So they've got something against the castle? You'd think they'd like having constant customers.

[The grin grows just a bit wider.] Somehow I thought not. Of course, you are most enjoyable company.

They're scared of it, because they don't really understand us. Or why some of the meaner residents come down and terrorize them sometimes.

[She swallows.] I'm glad to hear that. It's been a while since I had a date. I thought you would run away and disappear~

...that makes an unfortunate amount of sense. Not everyone up in the castle seems to have good intentions.

[And now he's studying her face.] Any reason why you'd think that? I'd think that a girl as sweet and lovely as you would have a line at her door down the block.

I wish that wasn't true... at least we can protect them.

[She doesn't shy away from his eyes, surprisingly.] It's kind of complicated. Mostly, there just wasn't anyone I was interested in back then. My boyfriend went off to war when I was about sixteen, you see. We weren't that serious, but I always hoped he would come back. When he didn't, my mind strayed to other things.

[He meets her gaze, and... wow. That's an uncomfortably familiar-sounding story, given his last memories from home and what he's learned from Cagalli.]

[Completely sincere.] I'm very sorry to hear that.

[She smiles softly.] It's all right. I know he got my last letter... That's what matters.

[A nod.] I suppose. Even so...

[A pause, and then Mwu shakes his head.] It's hard when kids get caught up in that sort of thing.

I was different from other kids anyway. I knew he was a SOLDIER, and I knew that they did terrible things, and about their advanced strength and the experiments.

[She looks up.]

But when I looked into his eyes... I wasn't afraid. [She seems to be directing that at him as much as the memory.]

[All right, Mwu never knew you could pronounce a word like it was an acronym, but there was definitely something strange in how she said SOLDIER. Still, he'll just meet her eyes.]

I like to think that I'm not the sort of guy who does terrible things. I like to think that I'm fighting on the right side. I don't like having to kill.

But I am a soldier. I have ideals and people to protect. My job is to fight, and kill, and even die for what - and who - I believe in. [He doesn't say anything more, letting the ball enter her court once more.]

[Oh boy, here they go again.]

I know. The whole point of being a soldier is that you don't have anything to do with the people up above who are giving orders. All you know is what you're supposed to be doing. You're protecting people, Mwu, and you're doing what you have to do. I can't judge you because of that.

After everything I've seen... I don't believe in war. There are good people on both sides as well as bad people. And in the middle of it, there are simply those trying to live their lives the best that they can.

I might not be a warrior, but I know that my actions have contributed to innocents getting hurt. That's why I'll never stop helping them. It's my duty to take care of the Planet, but even though humans and their fighting nearly killed it, I want to take care of them, too.

[He looks at her for a moment before shaking his head, the beginnings of a smile on his face.] Y'know, you sound like this kid on the Archangel. Shame he's not here - I think you'd get along with him pretty well.

[Mwu moves the stuff on his plate around a bit.] You really like caring for people, huh.

Maybe he'll come visit you someday. I'd like to meet him. [She smiles again, though it's a bit tamer than before.]

Mm-hmm. Maybe it's because, to me, people are like the flowers in my church.
