The Paradisa naughty police

I'm having a little trouble with the idea of the new volunteer...guard...force...thing.
Not that I disagree with it on a basic level or anything so don't get the wrong idea.
I think what you all are doing is a good thing and your hearts are really in the right place. I was tempted to join up for a moment since brain power (and average brain power at that) is all I've got going for me.
But then I began to think (shocking, I know) when I saw a comment about diciplinary action. With this guard there will of course be a time when someone is to be diciplined for what they've done and/or are doing. This is where I start to have a little bit of an issue with the idea.

Paradisa has a comparitively small amount of people in it. It's controlled by whatever unseen force that we generally just blame on the castle. If there is to be diciplinary action then one must assume that there is going to be some...organization behind this. This organization is the birthplace of bureaucracy and bureaucracy is in a way the birthplace of government.

The idea of a governing body in Paradisa kind of disturbs me a little. Government is corrupt. Even the most pure and well intentioned government will BECOME corrupt. This is the truth of things. This is fact. When positions of power come into being corruption follows closely behind, no matter how efficiently the body in power is run. With some of the people that are in residence here and the power that they hold a little bit of corruption could go a very long way. Could be a disaster, actually.

These are of course not immediate concerns and the thoughts are little more than half formed in my head. I'm just a bit of a natural worrier and the most well intentioned creations can turn into monsters.

/end thoughtful rambling

Just for reference: I'm not protesting the formation of the force.

With the way things have been recently, I think a corrupt government is the last thing we have to worry about.

If we're using that type of logic, then:
No type of government/organization + castle full of crazy bastards with superpowers = we're all going to explode.

That is an immediate concern.

Agreed. {arrow drawn up to Spike's comment}

Besides, it's not a government, just some people who are trying to keep other people safe. Not imposing laws on people.

Yeah, it might. I know some of the people who are signing up aren't stupid, though. If we notice things are going wrong then we are definitely qualified to kick ass and prevent that from happening.

That sounds like a good idea.

Diciplinary action is what I have continued to think over. I understand your concerns, but this Committee has no intention of taking liberties too far. The program is designed for safety in Paradisa--and to enforce safety, consequences for actions must be administered.

Diciplinary action entails that what the person is found guilty of, an action will be placed on them in return. I am not suggesting, however, murder for a murder, but neither am I suggesting that breaking of natural, moral laws will go unnoticed.

Your worry is, as you wrote, completely natural, but again I state that under my jurisdiction as well as that of the Committee's President that things will not be blown out of proportion.

And we have no desire to even think of turning this more than a safety program.

I hope I didn't seen intrusive on your thoughts.

It would be too forward of the program (and, in turn, ourselves) to do as such. People tend to come together under an organized body, so I doubt it will stray near that road.

Lana it is, then.

Yeah, I've noticed that. If the castle reacts violently against us and threatens to, or does, harm our members, then Selphie and I will disband the program. There's only so much you can protect against until it's against the place you're living in, I suppose.

Yeah. We will see, nevertheless.

Thanks.

I agree with the government concern. In all truth, I'm not much into the idea of a protective force either, but whatever makes people happy.

[identity profile] smiling-dark.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Whoever is in charge seems to like to have all the control. Trying something like organizing government could have negative consequences.

[identity profile] smiling-dark.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't think I'd leave. Too many comforts for me to do that, but I wouldn't be happy about the whole thing.

[identity profile] smiling-dark.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Your view makes sense too. Hopefully they just won't do anything like that in the first place.

Hmm. Interesting points. I plan to volunteer for the force, if only because I was a former guardsman.

But that problem.. it's a complicated one, obviously. A dictator in power would, more than likely, easily be overthrown. Unless this dictator had allies and some amount of power, but despite whatever differences in power there are here, we are all essentially equal. No one can really gain much advantage over anyone else since a dictator could not offer anything special that isn't already provided for us. I'm not saying I think a government WOULD work, though, because I don't think it would. Not so much because of corruption, but simply because everyone here is just.. we are all from backgrounds that are too different to agree on a single system. I've devoted hours of research in the library to every kind of government imaginable and.. I'm just not convinced there's a single form that would work.

Out of the pervasive curiousity which seems to plague me, are you acquainted with Hobbes, Descartes, or any of your pick of various philosophers, especially concerning theories of Human Nature and the like?

[identity profile] right-lane.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
To satiate my curiosity concerning the fears of the denizens of the castle; nothing more.

Ahh, you've helped, so I thank you for that.
