Because she was no help being around wounded people and she knew that, she had taken a different approach. Carrying the book with her in case she needed to open it to warn people or call one of the family for help, she made her way around the castle grounds in search of her rogue child. Using her speed she hurried as quickly s she could. He was not easy to find.

After the evening's events in the castle, Jasper made his way outside. He was tired of ignorant people trying to stop him - and that included Alice. Fortunately he'd had no fights with ridiculous 'heroes' trying to help people or prove something or ... Whatever. He walked calmly, figuring no one would venture out at night.

Upon hearing Esme's approach and then her voice, Jasper decided he needed to learn the Cullens' scents. Their endless attempts to convince him that he was one of them were getting tiring and really, he could do without. He sighed audibly and turned to look at Esme.

"What?" He asked sharply.

Jasper rolled his eyes at her. Really this woman needed to get over this whole 'mother' notion because really, Jasper had no mother anymore. "Can I help you?" He snapped, not bothering to be respectful towards her.

Beautiful!

Jasper raised his eyebrows, watching her write in her book. He wasn't about to ask - he didn't care much and still didn't understand exactly how the journals worked. If he did she'd have lost hers the moment she pulled it out.

"Ma'am," He said with a little bit of a chuckle. "I don't recall askin' you permission to do hurt your 'children'. And you know I can't help it if they're gonna come after me. If I get attacked, I'm fightin' back."

He shrugged. "Not my fault your boy doesn't know how to handle himself."

Jasper chuckled. "I never claimed to have no control over myself ma'am. I've got plenty of control. I just don't care the way about humans that you do, I'm afraid." He said with a little shrug. "And as for why you follow me, I don't rightly care s'long as you stop." He said, raising an eyebrow.

He looked down at her hand on his wrist and lifted their arms before jerking his hand away, catching her wrist instead. "I'd advise you not to touch me again. I'm likely to take that as a thread and we wouldn't want to leave your children without their mother now would we?"

He felt the anguish and momentarily, it softened him. However, Maria had trained Jasper hard and long in overriding the things he felt from others. Compassion wasn't something a soldier could afford. He blocked out her pain as much as he could, looking impassively down at her as best as he could.

He pulled his wrist back, wrenching it out of her grip. "I'm sure you're very strong, ma'am." He assured her. "But I've killed more of our kind than you probably care to count." He didn't take into account that she probably already knew this. He still didn't believe he was who they said he was.

Jasper took a step closer to her, right in her face almost, or well, that close, though he took advantage of his full height. "I'm not your child. So please get over these delusions of yours. I'd kill you and wouldn't think twice before starting on your 'children'. You're all in my way and I won't have that."

"What's the one who thinks I'm in love with her? Alice? I could always start there." He smirked.

When she shoved, he backed up a few paces. He found her aggression more amusing than anything. He didn't consider her much of a threat, though it had nothing to do with her size or gender. Jasper would never have fought against Maria - and she was almost as petite as Alice. He just saw this whole 'family' thing as a weakening and unnecesssary attachment.

"You could have avoided this. If all of you just left me, I wouldn't have to kill your little family." He snarled. At once he reached forward and grabbed Esme so now he was the one restraining her. "I wonder what they'll say when you're dead ..." He mused aloud.

Carlisle had gotten Esme's note. He had only hoped that she was still distracting him when he'd rushed from the clinic. He had gone as quickly as possible, finding his way to the outdoors and taking a moment to smell. He could sense his wife near by, knew she was still there, and was sure he could pick the faint smell of Jasper with her. So he did what any concerned husband would do; he rushed.

In his rush, he had managed to get there in time for Jasper's little muse. He had been angry enough seeing his son restraining Esme like so, but the thought of him hurting any of their family was something not even he could stand for. While his normal reaction would have been to interrupt, to try and calmly talk it out, he didn't feel that same patience within him. He instead felt a growl erupt from the back of his throat, and he quickly lunged forward, grabbing hold of Jasper's collar and attempting to pull him away from Esme.

"Don't. Touch her. Jasper."

Jasper had been so distracted by his anger towards Esme, his amusement as her apparent concern for him ... that he hardly noticed Carlisle coming. In fact the younger vampire didn't even look up until Carlisle was all but right at his side.

His eyes widened as he stumbled backwards, pulled by Carlisle's hands. He yanked away, having had his fill of being restrained by other vampires for the day. He growned at Carlisle, looking at him with narrowed eyes. He'd kill him to if he had to.

"Eager for your turn?" He goaded. "Wanted to go before she did?" He bared his teeth in a challenge, staring the other down.

He was getting awfully tired of having to fight people in pairs. It got just the slightest bit annoying. He turned his attention from Carlisle to Esme, feeling the woman's vice like grip on his arms. She was strong - stronger than he expected but again, Maria had taught him never to underestimate a female vampire.

Immediately he struggled against her, managing to rip his arms away from her. He turned sharply and made a grab for her neck, trying to get a girl hold on it. "I've just about had enough out of you." He said with a low growl from deep in his chest.

Without bothering to wait for a response, he used all his strength to shove her away from him, unsure and uncaring of how far or hard she'd get away, as long as she provided a distraction. As much as he hated to admit it, he was outmatched here.

Carlisle knew exactly what he was trying to do. He knew that he had to choose between capturing a dangerous vampire or getting his wife before she was hurt. Snarling a bit, he chose the latter, knowing that even if he'd tried to grab Jasper at this point, he would only end up hurting the son he was trying to protect. So instead, he ran, outstretching his arms and grabbing hold of Esme tightly as he all but tumbled to the ground.

He swallowed roughly, his eyes shut tight, knowing that when he went to look for him, Jasper would likely not be there. "Are you alright?" he murmured, wanting to be sure the choice had at least been worth it.
