[And once again, it is noon on meeting day in Patrol headquarters. There's a big open meeting room space, tables in the middle, a projector on the ceiling, computers in the walls. It is shiny, high-tech, clean, and full of a lot more people than last time. Yuan is already here before anyone else arrives, getting papers laid out and shuffled around. He seems tense, but satisfied. Things are finally coming together.]

((ooc: Please wait to tag until sections are up, thanks! Actually, go ahead and tag away in each section as it goes up. Threadjack lots! We're all in the same room, so jump in wherever you want.))

[Ray's mostly been listening intently to everything for the most part, getting it all on his hand-held tape recorder for future notice. he's so absorbed in making sure he's got it all straight that it takes him a second to realize that Yuan is talking to him.]

Huh? OH! OH, you mean -- that's me, right? I'm up. Oh. Okay, okay, hang on just a second --

[he stands up from his chair and grabs a large, heavy crate full of equipment] Can I put this over -- I mean, do you -- I'm gonna need an open space. A big one. Can I do it over there?

[he points off to the side]

Okay. Here goes nothin'. [he drags the crate out to the open space]

Uh, hi. For those of you who don't know me, my name's Dr. Ray Stantz, and back home, some friends of mine and I started up a company called the Ghostbusters. I guess the easiest way to describe it is paranormal pest control - dealing with ghosts, goblins, demons, all kinds of superstitious or spiritual creatures that can cause problems for people.

Now, I know not all of us come from worlds where that kinda thing is normal ... and I know we don't have half the variety here in Paradisa that I had back home. But all the same, I figure it might not be a bad idea to be prepared in case it hits us with a whammy like Slenderman again, so ... I've brought down some of my ghostbusting gear to give you all a demonstration of how it works. That way, if any of you decide you're interested in learnin' how to work it, I can ... start making spares and stuff.

I'm gonna be throwing out a lot of lingo and stuff that isn't gonna be familiar, and I'll do my best t' try and explain it all? But if you're confused, feel free to ask me anything. I'll try to make it make sense.

So ... uh, on to the gear, I guess --!

[to start, he takes his gloves from his belt and pulls them on, then takes two items out of the crate - a pair of modified welding goggles, and a strange contraption about the size and general shape of a hairbrush, with lights and buttons all over it. he puts the goggles on, pushing them back on his forehead, and gestures with the contraption]

These are ghost-detecting tools - the stuff we use to see whether or not there's a spirit, demon, or other paranormal entity in the area. They both detect the same kind of energy - psychokinetic, or PKE. It's a special kind of energy that only paranormal beings give out. It's not just for ghosts, though ... it works on magic, too. F'r example - [he turns the meter on and waves it in Yuan's general direction. the antennae on the sides begin to slide up and down, and the lights blink as it beeps, intermittently] - it picks up on Yuan's inherent magical energy, since he can manipulate the stuff. The more energy present, the stronger the reading. And, yeah, even the castle itself gives off energy. I took this stuff out into the Insolitus with Aradia and her FLARP party, and I got some really fantastic readings. I'm still compiling 'em, but I'll share with anyone who's interested once I'm done.

[he turns the PKE meter off and clips it onto a carabiner hanging from his belt] As for the actual ghost catching ... that's where the proton pack and the trap come in.

[he reaches into the crate and hefts out the largest piece of equipment with a grunt - it looks like a backpack fell into a vat of crazy glue and then wandered through a Radio Shack. it's covered in lights and wires and circuits and all sorts of strange doodads, and there's a sort of wand attached to the side by a thick cord. with a considerable amount of effort, Ray hefts the pack onto his shoulders, then catches his breath as he tightens the straps]

This here's the meat and potatoes of 'busting - it's called a proton pack. I could go into the science of how it works, but ... and no offense intended ... it'd probably just go over a lot of heads. Suffice t' say that it puts out an energy stream that's the opposite of the PKE energy the ghosts put out, and it lets me trap and contain a ghost, spectre, spook or demon indefinitely. [he pauses. most of the rambling is coming naturally to him, but he's beginning to realize just how much public speaking he's doing, here, and just how many people he's explaining this to. right, Raymond. forge ahead. Venkman isn't here to bail you out]

We keep the ghosts temporarily in traps - and I've actually got a castle ghost here, so I can show you how it all works. I caught him last week, so he's been in there a little while. [he can't help but pout a little. poor fella didn't do anything to deserve it] Normally, once a ghost is trapped, back home, we transfer 'em into a larger containment unit, but we don't have one've those here at Paradisa, and it'd take me a while to build one. So, for now, we gotta make do with the traps ... which pretty much are self explanatory.

[he pulls the trap out of the crate and slides it along the floor, into the middle of the wide, open space that's been cleared. there's another cable running from the trap - which is about the size of a shoebox and covered in black and yellow warning stripes - to a pedal near his foot.] This foot pedal opens and closes the trap ... but I have to warn you all, not to look directly into it. There's a really powerful protonic force field at work here, and you might get retina damage. Just look away or off to the side - it throws off a lotta light, so you'll know when it's closed. I'm gonna let the ghost out, then catch it with the proton pack, and re-trap it, real quick. Once that's done, I'll let him out, and ... try to figure out what you send a ghost for an apology present.

Ready? M'gonna hit the trap on three. One --- two ---

4/5. Imagine Ray Parker Jr. playing here. XD

[identity profile] ectobabble.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
-- Three!

[Ray averts his eyes and stomps on the pedal. Almost instantly, the ghost shoots up out of the trap and starts darting around the headquarters like a kid let loose from the back seat of a car after a six hour car ride to Grandma's. only, it doesn't know what to do with itself, so after a minute, it resigns itself to making confused circles about seven feet in the air, around the room. now that it's moving in a set pattern, Ray throws the power on the proton pack and takes aim, sending a stream of orange and blue light arcing through the air toward the ghost. it misses its mark slightly at first, searing a path across the far wall]

Sorry! OOOH. Sorry, I -- my fault!

[after a little bit of reconfiguring his aim, Ray finally manages to lasso the ghost in a proton stream - the light winding around it like yarn around a cat.]

Okay! I got it! Now, I'm gonna open the trap again - everybody, look away! --

[and with that, he maneuvers the beam over the trap, and stomps on the pedal again. with another burst of light, a loud sizzling of electricity, and a gust of wind that likely ruins the hairdos of everyone in the room, the ghost is sucked down into the trap. after the brief chaos of the capture, the silence that follows is almost deafening, until it's broken by the soft chirp of the ghost trap. a few bits of stray PKE sizzle and crackle around the trap, and a little LED light near the cable blinks happily, announcing the presence of a ghostly occupant.]

[Ray holsters the proton wand, then kneels to pick up the trap, which has begun to smoke. despite the minor property damage and the noise and the smoke, he's grinning broadly - this is his job, you guys, and it is the BEST THING EVER]

And that's it - how to catch your standard Class Three free-floating vaporous apparition! Any questions...?

[... Holy crap what the hell Ray who let you near anything dangerous ever ....]

[identity profile] loisfuckinglane.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
... I'm not sure how safe I'd feel having a bunch of people running around with those things here. What happens if something alive gets caught in that proton... thing?

[identity profile] ectobabble.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[just be glad he didn't tell you it's powered by an unlicensed nuclear accelerator, Lois! :D]

Well, that's why we generally clear the haunted areas before deploying the beam. But I've been doin' this for about seven years now and we haven't had any injuries from the proton streams. ... The biggest worry is not to let two of 'em cross, because that brings you into the realm of dimensional gateways and total protonic reversal ... and that was Spengler's gig, not mine, he knew a lot more about how that worked.

[identity profile] loisfuckinglane.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're sure you can build one of these from scratch without sending us flying face first into some kind of bizarre wormhole?

[identity profile] ectobabble.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, a containment unit? Definitely. I built the one back home, after all. It's just a matter of gettin' the resources. I would've tried by now, but ... I'm a little leery of wishin' for ALL of it, yanno?

[identity profile] loisfuckinglane.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Right. Well... safety first.

[identity profile] ectobabble.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, always! If I'd had the time, I would've set up a test chamber, but ... time and material were kind of an issue. ... Trust me, we've got mandates in place for this sort of thing.

[...he just won't mention that little bit about the EPA hating their guts. ok? ok.]
