[89]: Swanning off again

[After frantically searching high and low for their toddler, and not finding her anywhere, Nine realises how long it's been since she arrived. His hearts break as he puts two and two together.

He makes his way to the console room, silently stroking the console for a moment, before taking the TARDIS out as far as they can go. He doesn't bother to check if anyone's still there with him, as he isn't particularly thinking straight. Or at all, really. He just needs to be away from the castle.

He steps outside when they arrive, staring up at the stars. He isn't crying, but the silence makes his pain all the more palpable.]

[The sudden takeoff startles Turlough, who's been in the wandering the TARDIS corridors at random (which is the best way to find interesting rooms, of course). He makes his way into the console room just as they land, catching a glimpse of the Doctor bolting out of the TARDIS, and follows him outside, concerned.]

...Doctor?

[doesn't seem to hear him for a moment or notice he's there, too wrapped up in his own thoughts]

[steps up beside him and reaches out to rest a hand on Nine's shoulder] Doctor.

[the touch is enough to pull him out of his thoughts, and he glances at Turlough, his expression a rare mixture of utterly lost and helpless. It takes him a few long moments to reply.] ....She's gone.

[catches on and sighs] ...I'm sorry, Doctor.

[glances back up at the sky again] Knew it wouldn't last. Dunno why I let myself get attached in the first place.

[frankly] Because you're not a Dalek?

[laughs, in a slightly unhinged fashion >>;] No? The last one I met who wasn't completely insane seemed to think we were exactly the same.

[frowns] And you believed it? They're all completely insane, or did you forget that?

[shrugs] I destroyed my entire planet, Turlough. I exterminated my own people. And the Daleks. We were both the last of our kind. ...Or so we thought, anyway.

You did what you had to do, Doctor. Unless you're out to destroy everything else in the universe, you're certainly not like a Dalek.

[leans against Turlough a little, silently contemplating that for a few moments] You've got a point.

[steadies him a bit and gives a wry smile] Of course I have.

Turlough...[trails off, avoiding his gaze again] I can't go back. Not yet. Mean, I could take you back if you didn't want to stay, but...

You don't have to, Doctor, and I don't mind staying.

[relaxes slightly, winding his arm around Turlough in a strangely awkward sort of half-hug] Thanks. Need a bit of fresh air, I think. [that, and he has a bad habit of running away from his problems >>]

[knows this, but won't mention it] A few days away from the castle won't hurt anyone.

Maybe more than a few. [pauses] D'you know if anyone else is still in there? I didn't...erm...check. Obviously. [looks a bit sheepish]
