[The walk back up the stairs was much different from his recent trip down. There was no running, no anger in his step. He couldn't afford either of those now. Each step was slow, deliberate, as if he thought them out well before preforming them. Eleven flights of stairs still passed too quickly and the calm he had forced on to himself going upstairs was obliterated when he took that last step to the landing, staring down a hallway that felt endless though took no time at all to cross. He knew as soon as he stopped in front of the labeled door that the occupant would sense him but he spoke all the same, voice quiet, controlled, each word said with the same determination he had carried since beginning his walk upstairs]

I know that- [Sasuke stops, taking a careful breath that he exhales slowly. It was more difficult to keep his calm than he had expected] I know that you're here. I'm unarmed and I have no intention of attacking you. [There's a pause and he clears his throat, one hand clenching into a fist at his side] I want to know. [Hesitation] I need to know.

[there's no hesitation here - Itachi spends inordinate amounts of time thinking about the ways he can make Sasuke's life ~~better~~ ~~more difficult~~ ~~better~~ the way he wants it and knows exactly what he wants to say here]

[He feels awkward standing there in the hallway where someone could come out at any second but that fact is slowly turning irrelevant in favor of focusing on the current matter, his mind still trying to make sense of the things he saw Naruto write despite not being able to see Itachi's responses. His current guess is a long shot, he knows, but it is better than no theory at all]

You wouldn't kill me then, you haven't attacked me here. [Sasuke can feel his breath hitch uncomfortably] And if you weren't the one to do it then both of us would have died. [There's a pause and Sasuke wants to try and open the door despite having a feeling it's locked anyway] Were you protecting me? [He feels ridiculous for this] Are you still?

That is perhaps one of the more ridiculous things I have heard out of you.

Ridiculous as well as untrue. If my intention was to protect you, I would have kept myself in a position in which I would be able to do so. Clearly, this is not the case. [even though it is]

You might have but if you were protecting me from something or someone in the village, it would have been impossible to keep yourself in a position to protect me. Unless what you were protecting me from was the clan itself or something to do with the clan and the threat was taken away once you- [He can't even say it and he realizes the more he speaks the less sense he is making but nonsensical thoughts are all he has right now]

[Sasuke lowers his voice] Even if all I have said is incorrect, it still stands that you haven't tried to attack me or harm me. Naruto said you haven't hurt anyone in the castle either.

[conveniently ignores thaaat]

Why should I? None of them are in my way.

They may not be but I pose a threat. Every time I have seen you in the past you've attempted to harm me. Why is it different now? What has changed?

[time for a beautiful, beautiful lieeee] What I was capable of the last time we may have met and what I am capable of now are quite different. Or, to be more precise, I am incapable of using what I was once gifted with.

[Assumes that was his loss] So now you're hoping I'll kill you so that you can possibly have a new loss when you return?

[a quiet amused noise] Perhaps. It would certainly give me a fair reason to reconsider your usefulness to me in the long run.
