[It was pointless to try but after phasing, Jake sat in the middle of his room, eyes closed. He concentrated as best as he could, but all he could hear was his own voice and silence. Leah must have come from a time before their small pack was formed, and thus she was still under Sam's leadership. And Jacob, well, he was on his own, wasn't he? There would be no pack speaking here. At least, not with Jake.

Frustrated, he lowered his head and placed his paws over his nose. He stayed there for a while.]

[Later; filtered to Sam and Leah]

We need to have a meeting. Now.

We need to meet up and talk, Leah. There's a lot going on here that Jacob's got a better handle on.

I found a clearing in the forest to the northwest. We'll meet there.

Got any other plans, Leah?

Give us a howl when you get there. It'll be easier to find you. The castle might have, well, made it difficult for us to communicate. [no need to rush these matters just yet, he'll explain later]

[There's a rough sound of agreement, and a sharp bark that indicates he's already changed. Sam takes off out of the castle, bounding into the forest.]

[and having heard this, Jacob tears out of the castle, his paws pounding against the earth as he tries to race to get there. not that he would beat Sam's head start, but it felt nice to have someone to race with again.]

[Sam can't hear anyone either. It's odd, they're all phased, their thoughts should be intertwining with one another's until they can barely tell where one of them ends and the other begins. He leaps onto a rocky outcropping and howls, tipping his head back and putting all his pent-up emotion into the sound.]

[Jake's ears twitch and perk at the sound. He recognizes that howl, and the emotion behind it. He had to have noticed the silence by now. He howl's in response, until he trots into the middle of the clearing to join Sam. Now that they're within range, he lowers his head.

"Told you communication would be difficult."]

[Sam shakes himself out and sits back on his haunches, pinning Jacob with an irritated look. He's waiting for an answer, Jake. He makes a frustrated huff, ears flicking.]

["The castle is only partly to blame," he starts with hesitation. Even in his wolf form, he doesn't like the look Sam is giving him. "It seems people can arrive here from any given point in time. Judging from the fact that you need an explanation for this, that makes me from the future."

He snorts, expecting some sort of reaction out of Leah the most, but when he glances at her, she's silent. They were within the right range, shouldn't they be able to hear each other despite being from different packs? "But before you call me crazy, hear me out.

"There's going to be a time when some shit goes down with the Cullens. Mainly with Bella. And it's going to, well, I guess spur something inside me that... Makes me stake my claim for Alpha. And I'm eventually going to break apart.

"That's why you can't hear me. I'm not a part of your pack anymore, Sam. As for Leah, I'm guessing since I can't hear her, she's still a part of yours."

He lowers himself to the ground, glancing between the both of them, waiting for a reaction of any sort from either one of them.]

[Sam bares his teeth, looking from Jacob to Leah and back.

"That doesn't explain why I can't hear her."

If only he'd thought to bring an extra set of clothes. He stands, pacing around the other two before settling on simply shifting back, to hell with the nudity. It's nothing the other two haven't seen before.]

And you laid your claim as Alpha, Jake? You really think you could take me?

[With another huff, Jacob rolls his canine eyes and decides to phase back as well. He pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration, rising to his feet.]

It's not a matter of "taking" you, Sam. You know just as well as I do you only became the Alpha because I didn't claim it myself. I was brand new to it all, and you seemed like you had it together. All I did was acknowledge my right and the packs split.

[He looks over at Leah, still in her wolf form.] I'm having a hard time believing you don't have anything to say about all this. You're in Sam's pack. Why can't he hear you?

I should be able to hear you. Unless this place... [He shakes his head, frustrated. This place is doing a number on all of them. The tension simmers just under the surface when he rounds on Jacob, eyes narrowed and lips pressed in a thin, bloodless line.]

You just "didn't claim it"...? You think I haven't put my heart and my blood into the pack? You think I didn't win right of Alpha by my own strength?

[His muscles shift and bunch under the skin, and he fights down an obvious tremor as the wolf tries to resurface without his bidding it.]

What else will you do in the future, Jacob? Maybe take a leech as a lover?

[Though that blatant stab at Nessie may be unintentional, it's still out there. He doesn't need the strong ties of imprinting to take immediate offense of that statement, and she feels a shiver of anger run down his spine.]

I might not have "earned" it, or worked my tail off to be Alpha, but it was something I was born to be. Even you can't deny that truth. It's in my blood.

You don't even know what you do in the future, what is finally the last straw, why I choose not to follow you.

But maybe that'll change here. A leech, huh? Maybe you'll taken one, too, without your hatred for the Cullens to stop you.

[Another shiver of anger wraps around him and Sam turns, slamming his hand into a tree so hard it splinters.]

Fine. Fine. [He has to rein himself in, forcing the emotions back under wraps. The look he gives Jacob could burn holes in steel, though.]

You're from the future and that's why I can't hear you, but that doesn't explain Leah.

[Dealing with Sam was never one of his strong points, and this time is no exception. But regrettably, Leah has a point. The things that mattered back home don't matter nearly as much during their stay here, and Jacob runs a hand through his hair.]

We both couldn't hear her, and Leah couldn't hear us. And I really doubt she formed her own pack upon arriving here. [he gives her a smirk at that]

My guess is its her loss.

[Sam isn't too happy about it. It was the one link he had left with her-- it was intimate on a level unlike anything he shared with Emily.

He tips his head at Leah, still watching Jake, though.]

I wouldn't be surprised if she found her own pack here. it seems like anything could happen and it's not like she's not strong enough.

[Or smart enough or bossy enough.]

Is there anything else we should know about this place?

[He reaches his hand out to Leah. It's his own sort of apology for ignoring her. And... everything. Because she can't hear it right now.]

[He wished he hadn't taken off in such a hurry to beat Sam there, because as fun as a naked party in the middle of the forest was, he wished he had some shorts with him.]

Well, we know what you lost, [and he actually looks at Leah this time, rather than simply talking about her] and we know what you lost, [and he nods to Sam now] but I don't have a clue what I've lost. Before, it was my ability to phase. But when I went home and came back, I had that ability again. I just... can't figure out what it is this time.

[He has an idea, he just doesn't like it.]

This isn't the only time the castle is going to fuck with us, either. It plays with people without warning, makes them act differently or look differently against their will. It's happened to me a few times before already.

[Sam sighs quietly, a little huff of sound, and crosses his arms instead.]

Maybe someone has an awful sense of humor, whatever god or man has control of this place. [He eyes Jacob sharply.]
