In light of a recent... discussion I happened to read, I came to wonder about something. I'm sure bigotry, prejudice and the like exist everywhere to some extent, but I'm a bit curious as to exactly what people from different worlds view as inferior or undeserving. Race, species, heritage, abilities, etc.

[pen taps]

To put it simply, what's discriminated against in your world and why?

. . . Narnians were discriminated against in my world for nearly 1300 years. They were thought to be extinct by most of my people, if not simply fairy tales - their castle was destroyed and most of them killed and they were forced into hiding. I had only ever heard stories of them until I met them face to face in the woods.

I . . . like to believe that that bigotry is at an end now that my Uncle is dead and we have given them back their land. But I know there are still some Telmarines who believe them to be nothing but monsters.

In my world, the different races are almost universally taught to despise each other.

Ishbalans seem to really get screwed, back where I'm from. They've pretty much been reduced to a nomadic people.

Pretty much everything you just mentioned in some parts of my world. Race, religion, birth and generally any other difference someone could have has been discriminated against at some point.

If you're not talking about just humans, a lot of supernatural beings are labeled right off the bat as being evil and bad, because the majority harm humans. For example, I ran across a coven of vampires once that managed to live off of cow's blood to keep themselves from killing humans. Still, a hunter named Gordon tried to kill them off just because they were vampires, and in his mind that made them fundamentally evil. And generally... anyone with any real physic ability is viewed as a freak by anyone that has an inkling about the supernatural life that really exists out there.

Monsters. For the obvious reasons.

However, humans use the power of half-monsters to keep themselves safe. But they discriminate all the same as if we were not half-human.

...In my world, it's anything that's different from what is considered normal that can be discriminated against.

There are people in my world who harbor demons within them. The villages that they come from often treat them quite. . . horridly because of their fear.

Some have improved, however. So I suppose that it is getting better.

Anything different, really. Colour, race, religion. Even got a few comments in the States, meself, for bein' British.

. . . I suppose the one benefit of a world with no people in it is that there is no one there to discriminate against.

The Methuselah discriminate against humans and humans discriminate against the Methuselah, it's a vicious cycle.

Everybody who isn't a Time Lord.

Or, if you're me, everybody.

At home? All of the usual social problems exist, but vampires take the worst of it.

It depends on who you're talking to, I guess. Most Fire Nation people believe anyone who isn't from their Nation is inferior and undeserving.

The others are peaceful amongst themselves, though. So I guess the prejudice is singled out into one location.

[identity profile] sofaultless.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Zuzu, don't sugar-coat it. The Fire nation is prejudiced against all of the inferior nations, and they are prejudiced against us. Or rather, the inferior nation, seeing as one of them is gone and the other is as good as finished.

Monsters and those who happen to be near them. Humans are terrified because they don't want to die.
