A world unknown to me... A book that records the anguish and boredom of others, seemingly pointless questions being asked by heaven knows who only to be answered in the strangest of ways by other residents of this castle... In short...

This is a place that steals others' souls, places them in this world where we are all forced to survive through harsh conditions that could very well kill us to find the way back home!!

...I'm Yuan. And yes, the castle is called Cair Paradisa. It brings us here from our homes and we can't escape until it sends us away...which it can do at any time, without warning. Sometimes it even sends people home only to bring them back a little later, with no memory of their time here before.

The ghosts are normal, the journals are for communication (as you've apparently noticed), the castle takes something from you when you arrive, and the kitchen is on the first floor.
