During the early years of Christianity, there were many martyrs named Valentine. Two of these men would become the saints Valentine's Day is named after.

The first is Valentine of Rome, a priest who died for his faith in the year AD 269.

The second, Valentine of Interamna, was a man who became bishop of Interamna in AD 197. He is thought to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian.

Both were buried on the Via Flaminia, an ancient road to Roma.
