[Thread]

Who: Kaylee ([livejournal.com profile] sunshinymech) and Bobby ([livejournal.com profile] freezetagging)
What: Kaylee's explaining Serenity firsthand.
When: Yesterday evening (backlogging ftw 8D)
Where: Serenity
Rating: PG

After speaking with Kaylee through the journals, Bobby didn't waste a whole lot of time going down to the kitchen to see what he could find for Serenity's Crew. It wasn't like he was doing much of importance anyway. Some people got to use their losses, but, though it was nice, all he had to do was remember how things were.

Once in the kitchen, it would be interesting to find what sorts of pre-maid or leftover items there might be available. If those ghosts were around, he could have brought something nice, but ah well. Better than protein packs, just had to remember that.

He found a suitable box to put it all in and filled it up with whatever he could find that still looked good. Probably a lot of junk food too, but if they were from the future, maybe they'd never had this stuff before, and they were clearly missing out. When that was all done, he headed outside, casting a somewhat disappointed glance to the melting snow before he stopped a short distance away from Serenity. It sure was something looking up this close.

Kaylee got up from the spot she had been doing her latest round of tinkering and wiped her hands off on a rag. The engine room was absolutely a mess. Wires everywhere, parts scattered all over the place. She had gone from having nothing to work on to having what seemed like an endless amount of things to do to get Serenity flying again.

Of course that meant she really hadn't been paying attention to those things like eating and such. Speaking with Bobby on the journal that she had propped up in the engine room (so she could keep tabs on her friends of course) reminded her of the whole "needing food to eat" thing.

She headed out of the engine room and down into the cargo bay. While the idea of having real food on Serenity was great and all, she was really very excited to show Bobby Serenity. Pointing to some diagrams and pictures in a book on Fireflies was nice as an introduction for him but this was simply the best way.

Once she had crossed the cargo bay floor, pausing to look at the mule for a quick assessment of damages to it, she pressed the appropriate buttons on a panel to open the airlock doors, then the main door, which served double duty as the ramp up into the cargo bay.

She walked down said ramp to see if Bobby had showed up yet.

"Heya Bobby! Whoa, big box there. Thanks for bringin' all that. We'll get it up to the kitchen. But first-" She opened her arms wide to indicate the ship.

"This is Serenity! Firefly class transport ship, aught three. An' if ya walk just a bit over here," she said, leading the way off the ramp and just to the side of it to bring one of the jets into view. "Ya can see the jets. Them things rotate so's we can go straight up to get off the dirt an' such."

Back up the ramp she went, totally content to be back on Serenity and showing her off to one of her closest friends in Paradisa.

"An' this is obviously the cargo bay! Them stairs there lead up to the top part of her but we ain't goin' that way just yet. Those two doors up there lead to the shuttles. We can take a peak in 'em after we get that box in the kitchen."

She walked over to the mule, where it was parked up against one wall, a bag of tools sitting next to it. "This here's the mule. I'm gonna be workin' on it tomorrow." She turned to Bobby, all smiles. "So whaddya think so far? You're gonna love the rest of her!"

Kaylee laughed. "Yea ... 'less someone told me to I probably wouldn't be goin' to the castle for stuff."

Bobby was doing a lot of nodding but, considering the big box in his hands, Kaylee didn't mind one bit. As long as it looked like he was enjoying seeing the new sights she'd keep going like she was. After all, from what he had told her about the ship he knew, Serenity had to be somewhat impressive to him, if not just for the fact that it was also used for living on.

At his teasing a sort of sheepish look graced her smudged up face. "Oh, right." She let out a small embarrassed laugh. "Let's get that up to the kitchen then." She walked away from the mule and back toward the cargo bay doors and the stairs she had just pointed out. She quickly stepped to the panel to press the buttons to close up Serenity again.

"We're gonna head up these stairs. You first! Kitchen's up at the top, on the left."

Kaylee followed behind Bobby and just watched for his reaction to the kitchen.

"So ... kitchen. Sometimes we just sit an' play tall card or talk in here, or on them cushion chairs over there." She gestured to the table with its mismatched chairs. "Cap'n has us eat 'least one meal together a day. I like it cos it's more like ... bein' a family." She walked over to Bobby and grabbed the box from him. "I'll just be takin' this. Sit wherever ya want. This ain't gonna take me too long."

She walked over, plopped the box onto the counter and proceeded to put the various foods into various storage lockers in the area. "I did some paintin' in here when I first came on. Them vines ... ooooo chips!" She held up a bag of chips she just dug out of the box. "I had these when I was all little an' playin' video games with Bart. Yum!" Said bag of chips got ripped open and she continued on unpacking the box, only now while talking and eating chips.

"Back out that hallway where we came in at," she said, gesturing with a chip, "is all our bunks an' the bridge. Over that way," she gestured to the door across the kitchen from the one they entered at, "'s the engine room an' some stairs leadin' back down to the passenger area." She finished unpacking the last of the box.

"Oh! I can show ya somethin' now." She turned to get something out of a storage unit and plopped it onto the counter. "This is a protein pack. Well ... one kind of 'em." She picked it back up, looked at the label and sniffed it before setting it back down. "'s supposed to be chicken flavored I think."

"Most of the time it was nice. 'cept, sometimes not that much cos Jayne might go sayin' somethin' not nice or ... that one time when it was Simon's birthday the catalyzer on the compression coil blew an'..." Right. Enough of that. "But yep. Family away from home. Well ... a home. Cos this is home too!" She smiled at him. For her Serenity was more home than someplace like the castle.

Kaylee munched on another chip. "Chips is real good. Makes me wish we had 'em on Serenity ... well, 'fore we got pulled here." She waved a chip at him. "Got chips now!"

She just watched, more than a bit amused, as Bobby looked over the protein pack. They were horribly everyday foodstuffs for her and the rest of the crew, but obviously his world ... Earth ... point in time and space hadn't heard of them.

How lucky for them. She wouldn't wish a protein pack diet on anyone she liked.

Which was why his request definitely caught her off guard. He wanted to what? She looked at him, confusion all over her face. Who in their right mind would want to do something like that when the castle as all the wonderful, REAL food one could want. Well ... the curious would.

"If ya really want to I suppose I could make somethin'." She turned and rummaged through a storage compartment. "Ah ha. Rosemary." She held up the prized herb. "Sheppard always liked usin' rosemary." She set to work, getting out a pan and some utensils. If she forgot some details for a moment it almost felt like she was really back home and not still on Paradisa.
