sixteenth spell cast

Um... Cole is back. He's back and he doesn't remember me at all... I'm not really sure how I feel about this, yet. The last time he was here he didn't seem to remember how he'd felt about me. Maybe it's for the best, but it's still a weird feeling.

[Phoebe's decided to spend the day perusing the library. She's already found a copy of her book, as strange as that is, and has decided a romance novel might be just the thing to cure the strange feelings that have cropped up from Cole's reappearance. So she's curled up in a comfy chair with a copy of Dusk. She's a few chapters in and making a very confused face at the book]

They sparkle?! That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Do people actually like these books or is it supposed to be some sort of parody or something...

((ooc: I'm back. From outer space! Sorry about my little unannounced hiatus, there, but I'm back full force, now! And, yes, Phoebe is currently reading Twilight and disapproving mightily. Feel free to bother!!))

[Oh, Harry. She laughs.] You came from around the same time you're from, now. Though... you remembered me last time.

[She shrugs, taking a couple of steps away and leaning back on a table] You put a vampire on trial for attacking people. You lost. She was on a loss, the castle made her lose control and the jury decided she wasn't responsible. There isn't law per se. There are a group of us who work together to try to keep everyone else safe from whatever the castle throws our way... and any residents who turn out to be evil.

Well, that explains a lot. [And why a few people weren't too happy to see him back here]

Was I...Was I really a dickhead?

I... honestly didn't talk to you very much while you were here. You didn't really make many friends with that trial, though.

Great.

[Cole sighs slightly.] Just what I need. I think I spoke to the vampire, actually.

You did? What did she have to say?

She made me promise to not conduct any more trials.

[She can't help it, she bursts out laughing] I can't say that I can blame her. I've been subjected to a couple losses since I've been here, it's not fun.

[Sobering, she looks at Cole] You have a chance to make a better first impression this time around, you know. Maybe make a few friends.

So this place can make us lose more? [Cole seems uneasy about that]

And you know what humans are like with prejudice.

It can put us on temporary losses. Like... when we got turned into things back home. So far I've been turned into a genie and... [a pause] turned bad. I wouldn't really call it evil since we didn't really do anything that bad. They usually only last a week or so.

I think you'll find that people are more accepting, here. There are aliens, elves, humans, gods, vampires, anything you could imagine. I don't think a demon would phase them all that much.

There's the past, too. I mean...

[He pauses and looks away] I think I convinced that Harry guy that I may not be the same person I was before.

It might take time. Actions do speak louder than words, after all.

[She pauses. She knows that given the fact that he doesn't know her from Eve she doesn't have any right to ask this, but she can't help it]

Cole. Just... answer me one thing. What side are you on? [Her forehead creases with worry as she watches his face]

Still...trying to kick the evil habit...

[He looks away from Phoebe again] Even if I don't remember why.

[She turned away, herself, then. This really was the Cole she had fallen in love with what feels like a lifetime ago. Cole before he was corrupted and beyond saving. When she speaks her voice is soft.]

I could tell you... but I don't think you'd believe me.

If you are who you say you are, then I'm sure Piper'll confirm it. If she is here.

[Another deep breath] I think... I think I can set my suspicions aside, seeing what I've seen so far.

[She hangs her head, still not able to look at him]

Me... You decided to become good for me.

For...you? [Cole frowns, not really understanding]

Back in your time we were... together.

Together? As in together together?

[Cole frowns and turns his back on Phoebe slightly. It made sense, in a way. But why would he, Belthazor, one of the most powerful demons to walk the Earth and the Source's right-hand demon throw it all away for a witch?! And not just any witch, a Charmed One. One he was supposed to kill! He couldn't believe that!

He turns back] Again, how do I know you're telling the truth? It does explain a lot...

[He would have normally shimmered away by now, but...]

[She drops her head forward. How much to tell him? It's not like he remembered any of it, so it wouldn't make a difference. And she'd long since given up caring about telling people about the future, since he wouldn't remember, anyway. She turns around, facing him. The pain is evident in her eyes as she takes a deep breath, trying to hold it together.]

Yes. Your original plan to get close to us was to seduce me because I was the youngest... the most vulnerable. The problem was that you hadn't planned on... [She takes a breath. God this is hard] You hadn't planned on falling for me, yourself.

[She shakes her head] Believe me, or not, talk to Piper. She's from earlier than you are, but she knows you. She knows that much.

No, I believe you.

[Cole seems a bit stunned. He moves off to lean against a table, staring at the floor. What she says makes sense. He can remember the seduction part of the plan, but strangely has forgotten what happened to that plan. He knows he vanquished the Triad and became sort-of allies with the Charmed Ones, but the reason why is missing...

What Phoebe is saying makes perfect sense.]

It seems an awful lot to make up, if it is a cover story.

[She's leaning against her own table, watching him.]

I'm glad you believe me. Trust me, if it was a cover story I would have come up with something less complicated than all of this.

That's why I can believe you.

[Cole sighs.] Listen, Phoebe. I'm sorry if you're hoping we'll get back together and stuff, but I'm not too sure if that's the best thing, unless I can remember.

[Phoebe waves her hands, backing away so fast she bashes her leg on the table.]

Whoooah. Back it up, there, cowboy. I never said I wanted to get back together. I said we were together in your time.. When I'm from we are long since done. I have no interest in going down that road again, thank you. Besides, I think my boyfriend would have a bit of a problem with it. So, no, you don't have to worry about me trying to get you back or anything like that.

Right. Well, that's good, I guess. [Hey, he doesn't remember it, so he's not gonna lose sleep over it.]

So, where do we go from here? Start from scratch, or what?

[That makes her pause. Wait... starting from scratch with Cole. Is that even possible? It's just too weird to imagine. But... he IS from a time when he was trying to be good. She drops her hands, shrugging]

I don't know... I guess we could. It'll just take some getting used to.
