34 - Somewhere Out There - 34

...seein' stars fallin' like last night...you get to thinkin' how different it is, watchin' the sky from down here, instead of bein' up in it. There's some things about bein' planet-side that can't be beat, travelin' as much as we were...but I miss the Black. Seein' it from here just ain't the same.

With the rooms all changin' around...I was wonderin' if you wouldn't like t'just move in with Zoe 'n me. It ain't like addin' a new room would be difficult...and it's kinda nice, havin' a place like Serenity to stay at.

I was gonna head into town...maybe see about gettin' a bite to eat that ain't wished up. [and there's something lovely about being able to get it for free, even if she didn't make it]

I'm gonna take the Mule, if you were wantin' to come along, even for a short bit.

[whether or not Zoe and Mal choose to join her in town, Kaylee will be found there for the rest of the afternoon, enjoying the fall weather, sipping on a hot chocolate, and just enjoying window shopping as she wanders around the town. She's sticking to crowded places, still wary after the mess with Tesla and Riful, but it's too beautiful an autumn day for her to let it get her down]

Yeah, no, huh? [truth be told, he'd wanted to give her space and time to recover after having been kidnapped ... he knew she had closer friends here, ones who'd be better at helping her through than him - and now that she seemed back to normal, they could get to know each other. at least, he was hoping so]

He ain't at all pleased about not bein' able to get back to Serenity. But he's doin' alright.

Zoe's been askin' about tradin' with those first gen folks. Seein' if gettin' 'em alcohol might make 'em be a bit friendlier. But I don't know if she's actually serious about tryin' to see it through.

Not really desperate? I just ... I like t' be busy. Makes me feel like I'm earnin' all this free stuff we get, around here. Even if I'm not gettin' paid or anything... yanno?

It is sorta strange. I mean, it don't feel right, doin' stuff for free when I know how much we had t'scrape by back home. Not even just with Serenity. It ain't like my daddy was rich or nothin'. We ate well enough, but you earned your money if you wanted to keep it that way.

Yeah, that's exactly it! I was raised the same way - you're s'posed to work for what you want, not just say "Hey, I want this" and get it. ... I mean, it's nice once in a while, but... [he trails off, knowing he'd be repeating himself]

What'd you do before you joined the crew? If you don't mind my asking.

Mostly, I just helped my daddy in his shop. It weren't workin' on ships like Serenity, most times, but I got plenty of practice.

But practice is the most important part! F'you don't get to practice, you never know if you're doin' it right. .... It's kinda why we learned how to ghostbust on the fly, back home. Couldn't test the equipment 'till we knew we had ghosts to test it on.

Well, we knew there was at least one, so we built the stuff on the assumption that there were a whole load more. ... Geez, now that I think about it, I'm really glad we were right!
