[Five is hard at work in the TARDIS laboratory. he's been poking at the same samples and re-reading the same notes for hours now, waiting for a breakthrough. he can't believe he's been at it for so long, and not found anything. it's disappointing, and frustrating, but most of all, he's not making progress in the thing he wants to do most: help someone. he drops his head down onto the table and sighs. after a moment, he'll raise his voice, reflectively:]

♪ It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind... ♪


[he gets up, seeing no sense in just stewing in front of it all, and starts to wander back out into the Cloister Room, and down the steps]

♪ The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same,
I know the shame in your defeat. ♪

[as he rounds the Eye of Harmony, he feels the sudden urge to grab on to one of the columns, and swing himself toward the hallway door, his voice slowly growing in strength and certainty]

♪ For I've a hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck, ♪

♪And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again...!♪

[struck by a sudden thought, he takes off down the hallway, toward the library, where he starts going through piles of books almost frantically, looking for something]

♪'Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now, let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind!♪

[he plucks a book from the pile and starts rifling through it, until he finds what he's been looking for. tapping the page emphatically with one finger, he sets the book down and heads toward the console room, still singing, his stride and his voice both determined and sure.]

♪ So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call, despite my faults,
And despite my growing fears. ♪

[at the console, he sets in a few coordinates, and changes a few settings, adjusting the linear calculator ever so slightly, mindful of the lateral balance cones. the TARDIS dematerializes, and he grips the console tight as the whole thing tilts and shakes, exulting in the flight, even if it's a brief one. it's the feeling of travel he's looking for, that rush that comes with the journey - the feeling of being himself, even in the middle of this place where he and the TARDIS have been so restricted]

♪ But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck ♪

♪ And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again... ♪

[the TARDIS dematerializes on the crest of a hill, out in the fields between Paradisa and the spiders' forest, close to the Dead Zone border. he opens the door, slowly, and gazes out. Riful's mansion is visible on the horizon on one side, and the castle a little ways over. he lets his gaze roam from one to the other, the new perspective on the old familiar landscape lifting him up, somewhat. there are still new things, here. there are still mysteries. ... and there are still battles to be fought. maybe being trapped on the same planet for two years isn't so terribly constricting, after all ... he closes his eyes for a moment, against the sudden brightness of the sun, and soaks it in as he steps outside]

♪ So come out of your cave, walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land... ♪

[with that, he starts walking back toward the castle. yes. WALKING. he'll go back and get the TARDIS later, or use the recall circuit. this is a day for exploring. he's still singing as he goes, grandly - defiantly, now. he's seen this place drag people down, over his time, wear them out, hollow them. and he's not about to let it happen to him]

♪ So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say! ♪

♪ Because I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be ♪

♪ And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck ♪

♪ And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again ...! ♪

[once he reaches the edge of the castle grounds, proper, he flops himself down on the grass, flat on his back, and folds his arms behind his head, staring up at the sky. grass stains be damned, it's a great, wide, beautiful world, even with the oppression of a sentient, soul-feeding castle, and he knows the key to keeping himself whole in the face of everything is to remain enthralled by even the slightest of things. like the fact that that one cloud looks a bit like a beagle.....]
