[freezes, mug halfway to his lips as he actually turns to stare at Smecker] Eunice? Miss Eunice is your partner?

Yeah. I mean... not well. But she gave me a hand when I got here. Showed me how a few things work. [and was a bloody knockout....>.>]

[he'll take that drink from his glass now, before giving Smecker a veiled glance] So she's your partner, huh? [strange word for a wife... but what else could he mean?]... I didn't know she had one.

Well, she's my partner now. For a long time she was my protege. [eyes his clothing and adds in] My apprentice. I trained her when she came to work at the FBI. Taught her everything she knows.

Oh! [he looks almost relieved, even though the idea of a female apprentice for a male job was a bit strange. It's not like he hadn't heard a thousand times stranger, even before showing up here] What's the FBI?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation. It's a sort of specialized police force for the whole country.

Wait, he'd heard other people talking about that] So.... like guards? [sounding tentative. He's still getting the hang of this modern stuff.]

Something like that, yeah. Eunice and I dealt mostly with mob killings, with the occasional serial killer in the mix... among other things

Not a bad gig all things considered. What about you? What did you do back home?

[an uneasy shrug] Back home? I helped my Da with the farm. Helped with the crops and the horses. But I haven't been home in a long time.

[leaning back in his seat] Mostly I've just been doing a bit of odd jobs here and there... the fewer the better. [a bit of a grin] If luck's with me, I can make a decent bit off of a good game, so that helps with the worst of it.

Farm boy, huh? That's one thing I've never done. Looks like a hell of a lot of hard work.

See, I'm the opposite. I'd much rather work than sit around and do nothing. I hate not having anything to do.
