...Well.
I guess it lasted longer than I thought it would, at least.

[fridge door sound, hiss and pop of a can opening]

--Speaking of things that last longer than I thought it would...are we ever going back to the Castle?
Not that I'm eager to or anything, of course.

It's just that... well.

[staring forlornly at where a certain mad-scientist laboratory should be]

...Anyone else end up somewhere that is juuuust different enough from home to be really unsettling?

[when it was all over, it was still a little while before Jilly would be ready to go. There were dancing partners to chat with and musicians to praise, as well as one persistent fellow who seemed to tag along after wherever Jilly went (there always did seem to be at least one creeper in a bar).]

[meanwhile, said creeper is glaring at Billy and looking disgruntled at Jilly's attention being diverted]

[he's fine with her getting a little closer because, hey, he's actually pretty good at playing at something that he's not. He also manages to glance over Jilly's head shoulder and catch the guy's eye with a surprisingly cool 'fuck off' look as he replies]

Yeah, not bad. Can't say I've ever seen another band like them.

[there's a look of mild surprise in her eyes, but nothing obvious. Have that brilliant smile directed fully at you, Billy, subtley dismissing her stalker] Me either. I used to go see my friends play all the time, but they were a bit more traditional. This was closer to rock. [headtilt] I like it.

[the other guy looks a little wary about Billy's proximity, but he still gamely gives it a try] Yeah, my buddy's in a kickass band that's a lot like 'em. You know, they're playing a gig this weekend, over on State Street?

[glances over at the guy again, with a sort pointed '...really?' look, before answering]

Yeah, we're busy this weekend. [looking back to Jilly, nodding for her to follow him back towards the bar] You gonna get one more drink before we go?

Mmhmm... thanks anyway.

[and she'll follow, doing a fairly good job of hiding her amused surprise at Billy's sudden confidence.]

[she'd only had the one drink, and it was still relatively early so... why not?] Sure. Sounds good.

[sliding back onto one of the bar stools, she'll pitch her voice low just for Billy] we're busy this weekend?

[that random confidence sort of tones itself back down once they get to the bar, taking a seat and letting his shoulders hunch again. He's also not really doing anything about that drink he mentioned.]

Yeah. He was being creepy.

[head tilt] You want anything?

Oh... sure. [as if the thought hadn't occurred to him. Which, it mostly hadn't. And beer was FINE.]

What do you want? [she saw that face earlier. She's giving him a chance to order something for himself]

Whatever. [chance denied. He's leaving her to order something, as he glances purposefully over his shoulder one last time to make sure creeper guy was no longer hovering]

[some help he is. She'll just sigh and order herself a second beer and a jack and coke for Billy. Then, pulling out some cash, she'll close out their tab for the night]

[Meanwhile, it appears that Billy has been successful. The creeper has made his way to the other end of the bar to hit on someone else without a hero bodyguard]

[whatever, lady. He saved you from being creeped-on longer than was necessary. Taking the drink, he actually looked fairly content with his surroundings]

[She's grateful. Really.]

[This really had to be the most relaxed she'd ever seen him. After a night of good music, good drinks, and a chance to get out in the city, she was certainly counting it as a success]

So how long do you think we'll be here? [headtilt] It's already been longer than usual, right?

[looks up. He'd been spacing out a little.]

Usually things go for around a week, so...yeah.

I've never seen it do [gestures around them with his glass] this, so...I dunno.

Hmmm... [sipping her drink] I can't say I really mind.

Especially not after a night like tonight.

I dunno, though. It's close enough to home to be really familiar, but...there's some things that are missing. It's unsettling.

Yeah... it's been really strange, seeing what everything is like in the future. It takes some getting used to.

[blink, and a quick laugh] Oh, yeah. I'm from about 30 years ago. Things have changed a bit.

[amused] I was pretty happy with my world, too.

When you look at it, technology and magic both can be pretty impressive... it's just kinda fascinating to me that this world has both.

Magic was fascinating, up until the "yeah, I don't get it and--hey--holy crap, it can kill me" point.

[shrugs] I don't know though... it's not that different from my world, really. More obvious, but still.

It's not entirely safe... but a lot of times it's worth the risk.
