When the explanation was almost done, Mello licked his lips. His piercing eyes were staring at nowhere, displaying a light of satisfaction like that of a tiger which had just enjoyed its favourite dish. Mello's mind was busy imagining the situation created by Near's words.
After the whole story had finished playing in his head and he came down back to reality, Mello realized that he should say something that had always been difficult for him. The smirk was erased from his lips, and his eyes avoided Near's for now, focusing on a random, uninteresting spot instead.
"........You did well," Melo said seriously, and unlike those times when he was a kid, it was genuine and 90% devoid of malice. As if wanting to change the embarrassing subject before Near could say anything, Mello added. "And now... I suppose that you'll want me to live in a room close to yours, right?"
If Mello was going to offer Near his protection, he'd have to keep him under close surveillance. To tell the truth, Mello knew that he'd have tried to protect Near even if his rival hadn't requested so. Now that he got a second chance, he still had some fire left to fight for the number one spot; for that, it was necessary that Near would remain alive and well. Default victories weren't of Mello's liking, especially when killing Near was such an easy task.
