Near watched as Mello absorbed the truth, taking in the emotions that immediately washed over his features. He recognized several of them--shock, guilt, and anger. They were quite intense, most likely. Mello was not one to be calm in the face of such significant news. In that sense, he was the opposite of Near, whose features rarely ever betrayed too much.
Hearing that one was due to die imminently could not have been easy. Near could understand why Mello would find such a revelation distressing. Near would have felt the same way were their positions reversed. On the other hand, Near as not the sort to offer a comforting touch. Even had he wanted to, any such attempt would have felt strange and unnatural. So, Near just sat on the bed, remaining silent until Mello's question indicated that he was ready to hear more.
"Of course not. Leaving her alive would be far too risky for Kira at that point in time. She died after lighting the church on fire. Obviously, the Death Note was used to make certain that she would not be left as a loose end. Kira and X-Kira both shared that concern it seems," Near said, looping a lock of hair around his fingers as a smirk spread across his features.
"The move you made was critical to Kira's defeat. It yielded one vital piece of information that was lacking, and I capitalized on that. I was brought here from the moment of my confrontation with Kira, and now I can say with certainty that Kira will indeed be the loser.
"I would say that Kira was defeated by both of us. It would not be accurate to say that I did it alone. If not for Mello's actions, I would likely be the one who lost."
