"This world has its fair share of dangers, and I am without allies in this place. Mello is more accustomed to handling physical danger than I am. If you agree to try and keep me alive while we are here, I will tell you. I do not expect you to sacrifice your life for mine. Only up to that point. It would not surprise me if you failed occasionally, but I would rather not die. It is just self-preservation," Near said, shrugging his shoulders slightly. He did not expect Mello to die on his behalf. Mello's death had already led to their shared victory in a far more significant way. That was enough. And the information alone was not worth that much, most likely.

"Most of the time, I doubt that this will require anything of you at all. During an event like the one that arose immediately prior to my arrival here, however, I would not likely survive if left to my own devices. I need to plan for such possibilities."
